The Influence of Linguistic Background on Asymmetric Tone Perception Induced by Position of Context
نویسندگان
چکیده
Previous studies on categorical perception of lexical tones showed that perception of Cantonese lexical level tones depends on pitch level of contexts and the contextual effect is specific to speech. Moreover, a pair of stimuli with a right context is easier to discriminate than that with a left context. Although this directional asymmetric perception was observed from both native and nonnative tone language speakers, it is not clear yet whether such effect is also present in speakers without any tone experience. This paper investigates this question further by comparing the perception between native Cantonese speakers and French speakers on Cantonese level tones, which are presented in left and right contexts. The results suggest that the asymmetric effect is due to both language experience and general auditory processing. The second aim of this paper is to examine whether categorical perception of lexical tones also depends on lexical meaning of the syllable, by comparing the performance from native speakers on real speech (with valid lexical meaning) and pseudowords (without valid lexical meaning).

Influence of Induced Magnetic Field and Partial Slip on the Peristaltic Flow of a Couple Stress Fluid in an Asymmetric Channel
This paper describes the effects of induced magnetic field and partial slip on the peristaltic flow of a couple stress fluids in an asymmetric channel. The two dimensional equation of couple stress fluid are simplified by making the assumptions of long wave length and low Reynolds number. The exact solutions of reduced momentum equation and magnetic force function have been computed in wave...

Background: Morphine and lidocaine are known to influence the perception of pain. The present study sought to determine the influence of local administration of morphine on lidocaine-induced analgesia in morphine non-dependent (MND), morphine dependent (MD) and morphine withdrawal (MW) animals. Methods: Adult male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: Control, MND, MD and MW rats. Lidocai...

متن کاملAn Investigation of the Linguistic, Paralinguistic and Sociocultural Effects of Input on the Perception and Translation of Gerunds by Persian Speakers of English
In this study, it was intended to investigate the Persian native speakers’ perception of gerunds by three different elicitation techniques i.e., written, audio, and pictorial through translation. Eighty intermediate learners of English were asked to select Persian translation of the gerund formsin these elicitation techniques. They were asked to choose one option from a pair of written first la...
